Brad S. Chissom, age 75, of Northport, died Nov. 19, 2009, at Northport Medical Center-DCH. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at Sunset Funeral Home with James Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Arlene Chissom; his son, Russ Chissom of Singapore; his daughter, Penney Davis (Chris) of Hood River, Ore.; his grandson, Aaron Davis of Hood River, Ore.; and his mother-in-law, Rachael Penney of Northport.
Brad was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Indiana and Florida. He is a graduate of Leesburg High School and University of Florida with a doctorate from Florida State University. He taught Educational Research & Statistics at Georgia Southern College, Texas A&M University, and The University of Alabama. He published over 100 articles in journals and a textbook for Educational Research. Gardening was a favorite hobby with Brad for many years until his health did not allow it.
In 1993, Brad received the Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award from the National University of Alabama Alumni Association. After his retirement from The University of Alabama, Brad enjoyed volunteer activities for Master Gardeners, VA Hospital Green House, and Meals on Wheels. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian and had been an elder in Presbyterian churches in Georgia and Texas. Brad had a long association with international students at The University of Alabama and church.
Pallbearers will be Chris Davis, Kevin Davis, Boody Mason, and Qiang Song.
Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Stephen Browne, Dr. Daniel Potts, special friends Carol Schlicter and Ross Palmer, and DCH Home Health Care nurse Teri Grammar.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Brad Chissom Memorial Fund at The University of Alabama College of Education.
