Mary Ann Jenkins Shead, 94, of rural Mulberry, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 19, 1909, at Litchfield to John Mitchell and Estelle Waggoner Jenkins.
She was raised in the coal camps of southeast Kansas and Worland, Mo. She had been a resident of Curranville since 1936.
For the past 17 months, she was a resident of Sunset Manor Nursing Center, Frontenac.
She worked at the Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons during both World War II and the Korean War.
She worked as a nurses' aide for Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center from July 1956 until her retirement in 1973. She did special nursing duties after her retirement.
On May 7, 1923, she married Elza B. Shead at Hume, Mo. He preceded her in death in September of 1960.
She was a member for more than 50 years of the Mulberry Presbyterian Church and also the American Legion Auxiliary at Mulberry.
Survivors include six daughters, Leola Stevenson, of Paola, Montcella Snook, of Titusville, Fla., Velma Taney, of Henderson, Nev., Joan Hamilton, of Pittsburg, Barbara Harris, of Panaca, Nev., and Marilyn Soash, of Assaria; four sons, Clarence and William Shead, both of Henderson, Philip Shead, of Topeka, and Jerry Shead, of Kansas City, Kan.; two sisters, Florence Seward, of Tahlequah, Okla., and Martha O'Farrell, of Mountain Iron, Minn.; one brother, Kenneth Jenkins, of Frontenac; 50 grandchildren; 111 great-grandchildren; 72 great-great-grandchildren and two great-great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Crystal Barnard and Goldie Benoist; three grandchildren; 10 sisters, and three brothers.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Bedene Funeral Home, Arma, with Elder Bob Cuthbertson officiating.
Burial will be in Old Arcadia Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Bedene Chapel at Arma, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Sunday. The family will be at the home of Glenn and Joan Hamilton, 306 Webster. Arrangements are under the direction of Bedene Funeral Home, Arma.
