Joseph was in Civil War, wounded at Battle of Shiloh, lost an arm or leg, was in Co. D. 9th III, Inf. Vol, He was in National Military Home in Dec 1875, in serious condition. War history taken from a St. Clair Co. book on Civil War veterns. Not too much is known about Joseph. Family tradition said only that he had lost a limb in the Civil War. Records in "History of St. Clair Co., Illinois," 1881, by Brink, McDonough and Co., Philadelphia, has Joseph listed on pages 312, left column, and 134, as being woulded. On page 134, he is shown as mustered out, but no date. He was in Co. D. Karl H> Eisenhauer only said of him that he was from Ohio.
