John Roy Whalen Jr.
Funeral services for John Roy Whalen Jr., 85, of 1694 McQueen Boulevard, Orangeburg, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at First Southern Methodist Church in Orangeburg, with burial immediately following with Military Honors in the Greenbriar United Methodist Church Cemetery in Rion, with the Rev. Bedford Landers and the Rev. Marvin Clark officiating, directed by Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg.
Active pallbearers will be S.A. Bolen, Derrick Hoover, Harold Jackson, Lewis Jones, Douglas Thomas and Joel Waldrop.
Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Bozard, C.R. Smith and Peter Wiles.
Mr. Whalen died Sunday, July 6, at his residence.
He was born November 25, 1922, in Big Spring, Texas, the son of the late John R. Whalen Sr. and the late Lillie M. Pleasants Whalen. Spending his youth in Rion, he went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina leading him to a career in journalism as a reporter for The Times and Democrat, Copy Editor of the Augusta Chronicle and The State, and Bureau Chief for The Columbia Record newspapers. He completed his professional career by devoting himself to helping others less fortunate retiring as a counselor for S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation. In his spare time, he was renowned statewide for his abilities as an accomplished steeplejack and high elevation painter. Mr. Whalen was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Forces deployed to North Africa and Italy followed by additional service in the S.C. Air National Guard. He was also a member of Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 59 years, Anna Maria Luciano Whalen; his three sons, Harry C. Whalen and wife, Diane of Okemos, Mich., J. Sydney Whalen of Columbia, and Earl L. Whalen and wife, Lillian of Orangeburg; one daughter, Gloria W. Kempson and husband, Jamey of Gilbert; six grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jonathan Whalen of Okemos, Mich., Walker and Tanner Whalen and Kristen Minnich, all of Orangeburg and Jay Kempson of Gilbert; numerous nieces and nephews of Naples, Italy and England and several cousins of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.
Friends may call at the residence, 1694 McQueen Boulevard, Orangeburg and at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the First Southern Methodist Church, 2690 North Road, Orangeburg, SC 29118 or to Greenbriar United Methodist Church, Rion, S.C.
