John R. Oja, 68, of Lake Ozark, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach.
He was born Sept. 2, 1939, in Baraga, Mich., a son of Roudolph and Helen Karkanen Oja. He was married to Jeanette Nadol, who survives of the home.
He graduated from high school in Lansing, Mich., in 1957. He served in the Army for two years. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1963. He worked in law enforcement for several years in Florida.
In 1980, he and his family moved to Warrensburg, where he opened a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise. He also owned and operated Kentucky Fried Restaurants in Sedalia and Clinton.
Also surviving are a daughter, Lisa Oja, of Warrensburg; a son, John A. Oja, and his wife, Lori Ann, of Sedalia; his mother; Helen Winkel; two sisters, Margy Scott and Laurel Winkel; a brother, Marc Winkel; and four grandchildren; Chance, Trustin, John Christian and Taileena Oja.
He was predeceased by his father.
Memorial services will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Episcopal Church in Sedalia. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hedges-Scott Funeral Home in Osage Beach.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
