66 BIOGRAPHY:
Marzolph, Sr. (13) had three known sons. The middle son, Theobald Ostertag
(14) was bom in 1494 in Fischbach, Pfalz, Germany. He died sometime after 1538.
Theobald Ostertag, Jr. (17) was bom about 1529 in Fischbach and married NN about
1555 in the nearby village of Niederschletten, Pfalz, Germany. Theobald (17) died
around 1587 in Niederschlettenbach, Pfalz, Germany.
Theobald's (17) son Marsolph "Marx" Ostertag (18) was bom about 1560 in
Niederschlettenbach. He moved to Rumbach, Pfalz, Germany where he married Barbara
Jost in 1584. "Marx", like most ofthe Ostertags, seemed to have considerable stature and
influence in the communities where they lived. He was a lay magistrate, similar to
todays county councilman, in Amt Wegelnburg. "Marx" was a cartwright and innkeeper.
The Inn was likely inherited from his wife's parents (from Family Register, Vol. 1 1430-
1630, Rumbach and Schonau).
"The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) saw the demise of all Ostertag males bearing
the family sumame in Fischbach and Rumbach, so that anyone later with that last name in
the area, would descend from the Cleebourg scion or another branch not described in this
narrative." (From The Ostertags of Alsace and Palatinate by Dennis A Kastens.
Marzolph's (18) daughter Margaret was bom 1605 in Rumbach, Pfalz, Germany.
Both her parents died before she was married to Christoph Neuhart on 18 July 1627. The
Neuhart line is covered in Chapter 2.
Ostertag, Theobald (I4933)

67 BIOGRAPHY:
OSTERTAG
The Ostertag family represents perhaps the most fascinating history of Anna
Barbara Ubelhor's ancestors. The information presented here is largely from the work of
Dennis A. Kastens The Ostertags of Alsace and Palatinate and Rumbach & Schonau,
Germany, Family Registry, 1430-1630, LDS Family History Library, call number
943.3/R8, D2k. Also private communications from Miriam Hall-Hanson, volunteer at the
LDS Library in Salt Lake City, UT. The Ostertag line is shown in Figure 6.
The first documented Ostertag is Heinrich Ostertag von Windstein (1) bom about
1160 in the upper region ofthe Alsace. Kastens reports:
"Tradition is that about a 3r great-grandson of Ostertag von Ramstein
participated AD 1096 in the First Cmsade as a squire. For his bravery in battle
with broad-sworded foes, he was knighted. Upon his retum to Alsace he was
given into marriage with a landed family near the present Windstein Castle mins
in the Wasgau. This increased his influence and wealth so that by 1205, his greatgrandson
Heinrich Ostertag von Windstein would erect Alt Windstein Castle and
be referred to as "von Windstein". He appears to have married Sophie of
Lorraine, daughter of Duke Matthaeus of Lorraine, brother-in-law of Holy Roman
emperor, Friedrich Barbarossa. Sophie's first cousin, King Philipp IV von
Staufen, willed or deeded her husband the properly upon which Alt Windstein
Castle was built a decade later."
Heinrich and Sophie had a son, Werner Ostertag von Windstein (2) bom about
1190 and died after 1225 in the Windstein Castle. The next 5 generations of Ostertags
were bom and died in the Windstein Castle. Johann Ostertag von Windstein (10) born
about 1400 and died about 1470, was the last ofthe "von Windsteins". Apparently the
Ostertags lost support ofthe Dahn protectorate. At the same time, the Ostertags lost their
land and probably most of their wealth. Two of their known sons settled nearby.
Wendell, bom 1430, moved to Cleebourg. The direct ancestor, Theobald Ostertag (11)
was bom in the Castle in 1434 and married a woman, name unknown, from the Amt
Wegelnburg in about 1459. Theobald (11) died before 1487 in Fischbach, Pfalz,
Germany. The move from the Windstein Castle must have taken place well before
Johann's death in 1470 as evidenced by his grandson's, Marzolph Ostertag, Sr. (13) birth
around 1462 in Fischbach, Pfalz. Marzolph (13) married (NN) about 1487 in Fischbach.
His wife was bom in the Amt Wegelnburg, village unknown.
Marzolph Ostertag, Sr. (13) appears to be patriarch of the Cleebourg/Alsace,
Fischbach and Rumbach Ostertags from 1400's-1600's. This family from Alsace and the
Palatinate figures into the pedigree of over 50 Colonial American sumames. (from Vol. 1
Rumbach, Schonau, Nothweiler, Hirschthat, Gebueg Family Registry. LDS FHL call
number 943.3/R8 D2k.)

Subject: Western NY and pig farm in MN
Message: I have a little info on Baumans of Western NY. My acnestors were John/Johann Wegman and Margaret/Margaretha/MArgeret Bauman. John was born in Lancaster near Buffalo and Margaret was born somewhere nearby. On her children's birth certificates it says Irondequiot and Rochester (different times). I do know that she was related to a family near Minneapolis, MN who had a pig farm. My mother and grandmother traveled to MN in the 1930s to see the farm. Margaret had her first child in 1857 and her husband was born in 1834, so my Margaret should be around that era. Any info would be great.
On Oct 7, 1856 when Johann was 22, he married Margaretha Bauman, daughter of Anton Bauman (1809-) & Gertrude Aman (Feb 19, 1814-), in St. Joseph’s, Rochester, Monroe Co., NY. Born in 1835 in Irondequoit, Monroe Co., NY. Margaretha died on Jun 29, 1903; she was 68. Occupation: Homemaker.
Could be Baumer/Baumn/Bauman. The baptism record in 1860 indicates she was born in Rochester. The baptism record of 1867 indicates she was born in Irondequoit. Died of cerebral thrombosis; 102 Lake Avenue/86 Lake Avenue, Ward 9; Listed as a peddlar at death ****

In proportion to the vast amount of information that exists on the Neuhart family, the coverage of the Neuhart family here is very brief. Rev. Dennis A. Kastens has published a vast amount of information on this family. Rev. Kasten's mother was a Neuhart and he began researching the name in the early 1950s. At this time, he has published several books covering his research. Much of the material in this book draws from these resources.
There is some uncertainty regarding the precise lineage of Valentine Nauert (abt 1574 - 1636). He was possibly the son of Hans Knauwert (abt 1548 - 1608) in Dahn and the grandson of Fredrich Knauwart (abt 1518 - bef 1589) in Dahn. Another possibility is that a N.N. Knauwert resided in Niederschlettenbach and that Valentine was his son, because descendants paid 1644 and 1666 property tax to Bobenthal Authorities. Regardless of the uncertainty of Valentine's ancestors, he is clearly in our ancestral line. It is only his predecessors who are uncertain.
Valentine Nauert (abt 1574 - 1636) moved to Nothweiler upon marriage to his first wife, Barbara (? - aft 1609) who was a native of that village. She was likely a member of our Wagner family, as we have discussed above, but that linkage has not yet been made. Valentine Nauert was a subsistence farmer. He also worked as a teamster for the Schoenau iron works and likely drove ox carts from the ore mines to the smelter which had been reactivated in 1592. Valentine had come from a devout home and became a church elder at a young age, filling the term of another elder whose position was vacated by death in 1605. This meant that Valentine served the Nothweiler church for the next 31 years in that capacity. From 1621 until the time of his death in 1636, he was also the village Mayor of Nothweiler. Valentine adopted a nephew, Michael Neuhart into his household by 1609 and served as security for a loan in 1627 which Michael took out as a Rumbach blacksmith. Valentine's first wife, Bargara Wagner (? - aft 1609), was the mother of their son Christoph Neuhart (1599 - 1654). Barbara died sometime after 1609. Valentine married a second time to Margaret (1572)? who also died in1636. The years 1635-1636 saw the return of one of the deadly sieges of bubonic plague that nearly devastated Rumbach population. While we can not be sure, it is likely that both Valentine and his second wife, Margaret, were victims of the plague.

Nicolaus was the first to bring our Schneider line into the family tree with his marriage in 1651 to Anna Catharine* Schneider (1632 - 1685). Nicolaus served about 10 years as a Rumbach church elder (1664 - 1674) which was his station in 1673. It appears that Nicolaus Neuhart died in the autumn of 1674 leaving children ages 5 through 19 at home with the impoverished widow. In 1679 and 1680, the tax records state that she was widowed.

91 BIRTH: Benny was the third illegimate child of Charlotte Marie Jenkins. Benny was never told who his father was and he died not knowing his father's identity. James, Benny's older brother, and his sister Betty, were also born out of wedlock and all three children had different fathers.

BIRTH: Glenna Roberta Jenkins Green, Charlotte's sister, is fairly certain that Benny's father was a man called John Showalter from Cincinatti Ohio. In 1927 John Showalter came for a visit to Bakewell, Tennessee with his friend, John Jenkins, one of Charlotte's brothers. According to Glenna, John was quite taken with Charlotte and even asked her to marry him.

BIRTH: Glenna also reported that John Showalter returned to Bakewell in the late 60s or early 70s and enquired about Charlotte because he obviously wanted to see her again. Glenna didn't give him any information concerning Charlotte's whereabouts (she was living in Glendale, California at the time) because she didn't want to cause Charlotte, Benny or his family any problems.

96 BIRTH: Tombstone in Hensley Cemetary (Internet) records 21 Nov 1928 as date of death, but William's death certificate clearly states 20 Oct 1928 as the date of his death. It further states that his burial date was 22 Oct 1928. The year of birth on tombstone in Hensley Cemetary is false. On his death certificate, William's age on 20 Oct 1928 is given as 46. This corresponds to the year of birth recorded in the 1900 Federal Census.

DEATH: According to his death certificate, he died from a fall off the Medical Arts Building in Chattanooga, Tennessee - which was under construction at the time - suffering a "bruise thru chest & internal hemmorage with contributory shock." The Medical Arts Building is in McCallie Ave directly across from the University of Chattanooga. In 1981 it was bought by and incorporated into the First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga.

BIOGRAPHY: Violet Whalen reports that her father was a carpenter, but also painted. When she was born, the family lived near Billy Goat Hill in East Chattanooga. William used to make homebrew beer. His family was from Harriman, Tennessee. William used to hire a black lady called Aunt Kelly to help Martha Alice Manning with the children after childbirth. Eugene Whalen wouldn't eat her biscuits because he was afraid that the black from her hands would come off on the biscuits.

DEATH: Obituary in the Chattanooga Times 22 Oct 1928
Whalen, William Harrison (I49)

97 BIRTH: Violet was born on Glass Street in East Chattanooga, Tennessee. The attending physician was Dr Byrd. Her mother named her 'Violet' after her best friend.

NAME: Aunt Effie May Manning named her 'Toots'.

PHOBIA: Violet's fear of water stems from the stories she heard about her sister Thelma's drowning. This was reinforced by her mother's refusal to let her go near water or learn to swim.

PHOBIA: Violet has a fear of birds, in particular, the flapping of their wings. This fear originates from an incident in which Violet as a young girl was walking from the outhouse back to her mother's house on Porter Street and

EVENT: Violet was nine years old when she saw her uncle Caywood for the first and only time.
