Raymond K. "Rip" Whalen, 83, of Soddy-Daisy passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Williamson and Sons Funeral Home.
A Masonic service will be conducted at the funeral home by members of the Daisy Lodge #706.
Interment will be in Hensley Cemetery

159 DEATH: Betty Knapp

Betty F. Knapp, 79, passed away Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009.

Betty was born in Mobile, Ala., on May 25, 1930. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dr. C.S. Knapp; son, Victor “Buddy” Knapp; and brother, Joseph Fendley Jr.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Johnston, of Wildwood, Ga., and Judy (Claude) Petty, of Hixson; seven grandchildren, Geni Brownfield, Scott Adair, Charles Burnette, Marty Burnette, Joy Clemons, Jennifer Ward and Andrew Knapp; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean (Roland) Jones, of Lillian, Ala. and Lillian Mayton of Mobile, Ala.

Betty was former Vice President of Kay’s Ice Cream Inc. in Chattanooga and was employed there from 1968-1977. She was employed by Tennessee Hotel Supply Co. (THS Food Service) as office manager from 1979 until her retirement in 1995. After retirement she continued to be employed by the THS Food Service on a consulting basis until her death.

Betty was a member of South Seminole Baptist Church at her death. Her husband, Dr. C.S. Knapp, had served this congregation as pastor from 1968-1976.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at South Seminole Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Perry officiating. Also participating will be the Rev. Herman Parker, pastor of First Baptist Church, Bremen, Ga.

Interment will follow in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

Gifts in memory may be made to South Seminole Baptist Church, the Gideons or Hospice of Chattanooga.

160 DEATH: Cherokee - Lucille Jenkins Beck, 81, of the Birdtown community, Cherokee, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at her residence.

A native and resident of Cherokee, she was the daughter of the late Myrtle and Crawford Jenkins. She was a graduate of Mars Hill College and was the owner of Jenkins Grocery, a business built by her family over 60 years ago. She operated the business until she retired several years ago. She was active in Bethabara Baptist Church and Cherokee Senior Citizens, where she leaves many dear friends and loved ones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jarvis "Jerry" Beck.

Surviving are two daughters, Jerri Beck Crowe of Birmingham, Ala., and Diane B. Hyatt of Cherokee and two much-loved grandchildren, Jerry Hyatt of Cherokee and Samantha H. Cabe of Chapel Hill.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City.

The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bethabara Baptist Church. The Rev. Mitchell Smiley will officiate. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Swain Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bethabara Baptist Church, 1056 Adams Creek Road, Cherokee, NC or to the charity of your choice.

161 DEATH: June 19, 2003 Berniece Sprinkle Brewer (1916-2003) TOWANDA — Berniece Sprinkle Brewer, 86, of Towanda died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Lakepoint Nursing Center, El Dorado. Mrs. Brewer was born Dec. 1, 1916, at Dorrance to Floyd and Carrie Koetkemeyer Sprinkle. She was graduated from Dorrance High School in 1934 and from Brown Mackie Business College, Salina, several years later. She worked as a secretary in Russell, Washington, D.C. and Seal Beach, Calif. She married Ben Herbel of Dorrance in 1942. He was killed in 1944 in World War II. Her next husband, Richard Siler, died in 1971. She married Newt Brewer in 1971 and he died in 1981. Survivors include two brothers, Roy Sprinkle of Westminister, Colo., and Gilbert Sprinkle of Hutchinson; a sister, Dolores Langhofer of Towanda; a host of nieces and nephews; five stepchildren; and several stepgrandchildren. The funeral was Wednesday at Foster Mortuary, Wilson. Burial was in Dorrance Cemetery.
