Violet, her mother, her brother Gene, Caywood's son Richard and Richard's wife Alice (the couple lived in Florida) went to see Caywood in a prison hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. DEATH: According to his death certificate, he died from a fall off the Medical Arts Building in Chattanooga, Tennessee - which was under construction at the time - suffering a "bruise thru chest & internal hemmorage with contributory shock." The Medical Arts Building is in McCallie Ave directly across from the University of Chattanooga. In 1981 it was bought by and incorporated into the First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga.

BIOGRAPHY: Violet Whalen reports that her father was a carpenter, but also painted. When she was born, the family lived near Billy Goat Hill in East Chattanooga. William used to make homebrew beer. His family was from Harriman, Tennessee. William used to hire a black lady called Aunt Kelly to help Martha Alice Manning with the children after childbirth. Eugene Whalen wouldn't eat her biscuits because he was afraid that the black from her hands would come off on the biscuits.

DEATH: Obituary in the Chattanooga Times 22 Oct 1928

    Died:
According to his death certificate, William Harrison Whalen fell off the Medical Arts Building while it was under construction.

According to a March 31, 1929 Chattanooga Times article, the Medical Arts building was a skyscraper built in the art deco style and especially for the healthcare community and its patients. Architect Reuben H. Hunt had met with many of the doctors to determine the design of the building.

The Medical Arts building featured a design of practicality and elegance. The telephone system routed calls directly to the doctor?s office. Physicians checked in and out with an operator so that they could always be reached. By being a high-rise, the building didn?t have long corridors found in single-level buildings. Materials used in construction included alabaster, brass, marble, steel, and walnut.

The building was patterned after one in Baltimore, Maryland, and was designed to be fire-proof.

Construction began in July, 1928 and was completed on April 1, 1929. Total cost was $500,000. The Medical Arts building was easily visible as one entered Chattanooga from Missionary Ridge, and joined the city?s list of skyscrapers.

William married Martha Alice Manning on 15 Nov 1913 in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee. Martha (daughter of James Grant Manning and Sara Elizabeth Petty) was born on 27 Jan 1891 in Melville, Hamilton County, Tennessee; died on 30 Aug 1988 in Soddy-Daisy, Hamilton County, Tennessee; was buried in Hensley Cemetery, Hixson, Hamilton County, Tennessee. Notes:

Violet Belle Whalen's birth certificate shows her mother's birthplace as Soddy, Tennessee.

Year of birth on tombstone in Hensley Cemetary is false.
