    According to John Ray Whalen's son, his father left home because his father's second wife, Mary Lane, was mean to the kids. Harry Whalen described her as a "hellcat." Mary Lane is said to have beaten Stella Whalen a lot and James Knox Polk Whalen eventually left her and went to live with his son, William Harrison Whalen.

    The year of birth given on his death certificate is 1841. According to the 1850 and the 1860 US census, James Knox Polk Whalen was born in 1846. The 1900 US census gives his birthdate as May 1840. In the Family Bible of Gardner Whalen Sr. and his wife Elizabeth, James Knox Polk Whalen is listed as James Piney and his birth date is given as 09 June 1845.

    James Knox Polk Whalen was living with his son, William Harrison, in Daisy, Tennessee when he died.

    Served in the Confederate Army as a private in Company H of the First Regiment Tennessee Calvary Co. "H" Formerly Co. "G", Thomas North Carolina Legion. Organized September 24, 1862 from Jefferson County. Captains David Neff, T. Coursey.

    WHALEN, James K. P. Co. H, 1 E.T. Cav. (Carter's) Born June, 1845 in Jefferson Co. and raised there. Enl. at Dandridge, TN about Aug. 1, 1863. Capt. at or near Mossy Creek, Mch. 27, 1864 and imprisoned at Camp Morton until June 12, 1865. About one year aftr war he left TN and went to KY and stayed 2 years before moving to IL and eventually back to TN. Res. Sherman Heights.
